International Justice: Nuremberg and Beyond
A Distinguished Scholar Seminar Featuring Gerhard L. Weinberg,
William Rand Kenan, Jr., Professor of History, Emeritus
With Support from the Center for European Studies
July 12, 2008

Gerhard Weinberg
The Nuremberg trials stand as a watershed in the development of international justice. During World War II, the Allies repeatedly warned the Germans, Italians, and Japanese publicly that the terrible crimes they were committing against civilians and prisoners of war would be punished after Allied victory. Allied leaders hoped that this might both restrain the perpetrators and uphold the morale of the victims. There were considerable differences among the Allies as to how to go about this matter in practice, but eventually the powers reached an agreement. This seminar will review these developments and examine the actual trials that followed. We will focus our attention on trials in Europe, but those in East Asia will also receive some attention. A final session will engage the pause in international efforts in the same direction during the Cold War, their resumption in more recent years, and the extent to which prior precedents have been followed or reversed.
Gerhard L. Weinberg is the author of ten books, including A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II (which received three major awards for scholarship, was a Book of the Month Club Main Selection, and is widely considered to be the best single-volume history of World War Two), Visions of Victory: The Hopes of Eight World War Two Leaders, and Hitler’s Foreign Policy: 1933-1939 The Road to World War II.
